CIFOR-ICRAF and the “super year of nature”
For forests, trees and landscapes, 2021 will be a defining year. Global challenges from accelerating climate change and biodiversity loss to rising inequality and unsustainable food systems will be countered with initiatives like the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, multilateral efforts including the UN climate talks and the Convention on Biodiversity and many others supporting nature and a sustainable future for people and the planet. CIFOR-ICRAF will bring science and innovation to these dialogues and share actionable solutions through our projects across the Global South, digital events and workshops as well as many other forms of engagement and outreach. Please stay tuned on our websites, social media channels and join our events this year as we work together with you to help make 2021 the “super year of nature”!

Trees and the circular bioeconomy: digital forum
Forests, trees, landscapes and agroforestry can catalyse the transition to a circular bioeconomy characterised by renewable resources, reduced waste and zero emissions. Join us on March 19 as CIFOR-ICRAF and its partners, the European Forestry Institute and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, host the world’s first conference examining the forest-based bioeconomy with a focus on the Global South. It doesn’t stop there, so please check our websites for upcoming events in 2021.

Share your ideas on sourcing tree seeds
A call to tree growers: help CIFOR-ICRAF scientists improve the way we source tree planting material. Following last year’s CIFOR-ICRAF digital forum called Can tree planting save our planet?, we are conducting an online survey of tree planters, scientists, the funders of tree planting initiatives - and anyone else working on ways to restore the planet’s forests.

Shaping change
Agroecology is getting a closer look as a proven way to build resilience in landscapes and communities. It improves productivity, helps farmers connect to social networks and consumers and can play a major role in transforming the world’s food system for people and the planet. Agroecology is part of CIFOR-ICRAF efforts to bring transformative change to the way we produce food by researching and supporting a holistic, landscape approach that harmonizes livelihood and environmental values.
