Op-ed written by Jacob Phelps on the potential role of Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) in tackling environmental crime in Indonesia. The story is focusing specifically on illegal peatland fires to clear land in Sumatra. These fires, and the associated haze, have already started again in 2015, and are one of Indonesia's leading environmental problems. It is widely recognised that, at least some of these fires, also involve links to international investor and to Indonesians that conduct their banking outside of Indonesia. These international links can make it difficult to prosecute these cases. MLA can leverage this example to introduce the idea of MLA, and how it is increasingly relevant to addressing these types of challenges in Indonesia.
