Climate Summit Starts in Marrakesh

The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will meet in Morocco today to craft policies that will slow the rise of the world’s average temperature and implement a plan that will lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. In 2013, the Cambodian government submitted its first strategic national plan on climate change, which attempts to integrate climate change into national planning and policy, addressing GHG mitigation and low-carbon development. According to the Center for International Forestry Research, tropical deforestation accounts for 15 percent of global GHG emissions. Trees trap and store huge amounts of carbon dioxide reserves but when they are cut down that CO2 is released back into the atmosphere contributing to global warming. Cambodia suffers from one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with an average of one percent of the country’s forest lost each year.
