Governing oil palm for gender equality and women’s empowerment – a multi-stakeholder dialogue

03 Mar 2017, Gedung IASTH Lantai 3 (3rd floor), University of Indonesia Salemba Campus

The policy dialogue is jointly hosted by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Gender Studies Graduate Program (Kajian Gender) at the School of Strategic and Global Studies, University of Indonesia. CIFOR and Kajian Gender have been undertaking a series of research projects on gender and oil palm in Indonesia with support from Rights and Resources Initiative, Oxfam, University of Brighton, the UK Department of International Development, and United States Agency for International Development. The research points out that women play a critical role in oil palm as workers, members of local communities, members of smallholder households, and investors. Oil palm offers both challenges and opportunities for these diverse groups of women and their families. And yet, the emerging policy discussions related to sustainability of oil palm supply chains, inclusion of smallholders, promotion of rights of workers and indigenous peoples, need to better consider gender
as a key cross-cutting issue; and strive for greater gender equality and women’s empowerment through proposed policies and actions in the sector.
