Forest management

CIFOR aims to address the factors that help or hinder rural people’s access to forest resources and to find more equitable ways to manage forests for better productivity.

Good forest management is essential to supporting and balancing stakeholders’ needs while protecting the sustainability of forests and their goods and services. But while decisions are made by local, regional, national and international institutions, policies and practices at one level may not always integrate with those at other levels.

CIFOR works across multiple scales and functions to better understand forest management in specific contexts, and to strengthen management systems to support equity, transparency, accountability and social justice.
