Climate change mitigation and REDD+

Through its work on REDD+, bioenergy, wetlands and blue carbon, CIFOR supports the development of policies and measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Forests are a carbon sponge, absorbing nearly a third of the global amount of carbon dioxide released from burning fossil fuels each year. But they can also release carbon – up to 20% of all annual emissions come from deforestation and land use change.

CIFOR’s work on climate mitigation considers everything from REDD+ implementation to land-use change and wetland carbon stores, helping countries design and implement effective climate policies and practices.
