Biodiversity

CIFOR explores the complex relationships between forests, food and the biological diversity that is critical to our planet’s survival.

Over 10 million species of animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms inhabit Earth. This diversity plays a key role in healthy diets, housing and clothing, clean water, flood control, fertile soils and pollination, and helps build resilience to unexpected crop failings – and climate change.

With only a fraction of known species studied for their potential medicinal, agricultural or industrial value, the greatest value of biodiversity might still be unknown. CIFOR aims to raise awareness of the important role of biodiversity in food security.
