Nathalie van Vliet is senior associate researcher at CIFOR-ICRAF, focusing on the links between wildlife and livelihoods. She holds a PhD in Geography and has worked for the last 25 years on wild meat and its contribution to food security and local economies in Central Africa, the Amazon and the Caribbean. She works at local, national and international levels and has more than 100 scientific publications. Nathalie’s research provides more visibility to current wild meat use, supported by objective data for innovative management policies that include ecological, cultural and socio-economic sustainability. Currently, she is a member of the Technical and Scientific Committee and the Global policy group from the Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme (SWM) and is the site coordinator for SWM in Guyana. She is also the lead expert on wildlife within the Yangambi Engagement Landscape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her new research interests focus on biodiversity and how local communities can benefit from the proposed biodiversity finance mechanisms to reward their role as stewards of wildlife.
