FORESTS VERSUS HURRICANES
Inside Indonesia’s fires and haze

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria arrived in terrifying succession these past two months, with the first two ending a 12-year absence of major hurricane landfalls in the continental United States of America. What could have changed to bring about such major storms?

According to emerging theories being developed in collaboration with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), large-scale forest loss may be a contributing factor in creating the atmospheric conditions for hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones to develop, while standing forests have the potential to protect continents from storms.

Douglas Sheil, a CIFOR senior associate and professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), explains how water, trees and storms are linked, and what cutting-edge theories have to say about the role of forests in preventing disaster.
