Farmers in the Nyandarua county have suffered major losses due to the rampant soil erosion. However, this is set to change, thanks to a new methodology -- Payment for Environmental Services -- which addresses issues of soil erosion. Some farmers have already started reaping the benefits of this initiative. According to the Center for International Forestry Research, PES concept has garnered substantial international interest as a cost-effective means to improve environmental management and improve livelihoods by rewarding people for their efforts in providing ecosystem services, such as watershed protection or soil stabilisation.
