Tobacco cultivation causes deforestation hilly areas

A fisherman at Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar, Zainul Abedin worried when the hills erode and come crashing down to fill up the Matamuhuri River. It happens so often because of the trees were cut down for processing tobacco. Centre for International Forestry Research said that deforestation was caused in large-scale by tobacco cultivation in south-eastern districts of Bangladesh in the past century. A Tobacco Atlas report blamed tobacco cultivation for 31 per cent deforestation in Bangladesh.
