In 2011, the global aspiration to restore 150 million hectares of the worlds deforested and degraded lands by 2020 was established as the Bonn Challenge. Subsequently, during the U.N. Climate Summit in 2014, this target was extended by adding another 200 million hectares to be restored by 2030 under the New York Declaration on Forests, bringing the global target to 350 million hectares by 2030. The goal drives many of the reforestation efforts ongoing today.
