Improving forest reference emission levels (FREL) in wetland-rich tropical countries

Tropical countries with large stretches of wetlands like Indonesia, Peru, the Republic of Congo (RoC), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have major climate change mitigation potential. But it can be difficult for these countries to accurately monitor the emissions that are sequestered in these ecosystems when they’re restored or ignored or released when they’re deforested, drained, or otherwise degraded.CIFOR and the International Tropical Peatland Center (ITPC) is running projects in wetland-rich countries to help them improve forest reference emission levels (FREL) for wetlands and better track their NDC contributions in the process.
