Should forest biomass count as renewable energy? CIFOR responds

As the European Union Parliament debates changes to a Renewable Energy Directive, more than 650 scientists have signed an open letter opposing the inclusion of biomass from standing forests in the Directive, saying it should be limited to only residues and waste. Robert Nasi, Director General of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), gives his take on the issue, based on the scientific evidence available.
