This project is a collaboration between the Thünen Institut and CIFOR under the Thünen Institut-led research project on ‘Forest Land-use and Ecosystem Service Restoration in Africa’ (FLESRA). FLESRA aims to collect and analyze scientific data on best concept practices, incorporating success and failure factors for forest land restoration at both site and landscape level. Specifically, this research focuses on the performance of different silvicultural techniques, their cost–benefit structures and approaches in relation to business-as-usual cases under different biophysical attributes and stakeholder settings. As part of this collaboration, CIFOR is implementing work in Ethiopia. This includes the collection of data, analysis and joint publication. It focuses on policy recommendations for more effective implementation of forest restoration and scaling up the successful pilot restoration approaches.
