This project aims to identify the potential for sustainable biofuel production on degraded and marginal land, supporting rural livelihoods and rehabilitation of degraded land in Indonesia. The project employs a combination of approaches, including a literature review and synthesis, spatial analyses and modeling, participatory research methods, field-based action research on tree/crop performance and laboratory/chemical analyses. In acknowledgment of potential food–energy–environment conflicts, we consider only situations involving degraded and/or abandoned land for biomass production. The aim is to use the results to inform and shape key development policy processes, such as the Sustainable Bioenergy Programme in Central and East Kalimantan Provinces.
