The CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry: Livelihoods, Landscapes and Governance (FTA) fills a particular niche in the overall CGIAR Portfolio.
FTA is the only program working on all aspects of the value and benefits of trees and forests for people, landscapes and agricultural sustainability. It is also the world's largest integrated program on these issues.
Since it began in 2011, FTA has demonstrated the crucial role forests, trees and agroforestry systems play in producing goods of both local and global importance and supporting food systems through regulation and the provision of ecosystem services.
The second phase of FTA, from 2017 to 2022, builds on the solid foundation of the first 5 years. It widens the research scope and reinforces collaboration with partners.
This makes research on forests, trees and agroforestry even more relevant for the Sustainable Development Goals and the CGIAR Strategic Framework. With Phase 2, FTA is breaking new ground scientifically to achieve a balance between development and environmental sustainability.
