Institutional arrangements and technical options for sustainable cattle beef production are central to maintain reduced deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon, and enhance the provision of environmental services. Sustainable land use can be stimulated through multiple policy incentives and regulations, as well as through the voluntary adoption of production standards. Institutional arrangements involving both public and private actors have proven critical in leading to deforestation reduction in the “Green Municipalities”. Yet, transition towards eco-efficient and low carbon production systems for beef production, remains very limited, especially in small and medium-scale farms, thus feasible technical options and public-private arrangements are required.
