This project aims to take stock of the community forestry enterprises involved in the commercialization of timber in Africa. During an Expert Group meeting on the commercialization of community forestry products held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in March 2012, participants agreed to take stock of initiatives at the national and regional levels, with particular attention paid to timber. This is because timber is one of the most valuable forest products and one that has been frequently restricted for community forests or neglected in many countries. The lessons emerging from this study are directly relevant to the commercialization of non-timber forest products, as well as services.
