Visit with Briada Stéphane, ITA Agricultural Technician, Cocoa Plantation Project 2015 - Currently all the production is consumed in Cameroon - The yield of the (improved) cocoa hybrid variety is 1000 kg of marketable cocoa (dried beans ready for sale) per hectare per year. Cocoa pods after bean extraction can be used for composting (organic fertilizer) and animal feed.
Apart from plantain and yam, cocoa plantations can also be intercropped with fruit trees such as oil palms, coconut palms, citrus fruits, avocado trees, or mango trees. For the duration of a cocoa orchard, full production may be maintained for an average of 20 years depending on maintenance; beyond 25 years, production drops considerably because of difficulties in maintaining trees that have become very large.
The peak cocoa production areas are the Central, South, East, South-West and Littoral regions.
Each farmer has a plot of 1 to 1.5 hectares for good profitability. Cameroon, whose average cocoa production is around 200 000 tonnes for at least five years, only processes 25%%%% of its production locally, a volume that the country intends to double by 2020.
