CIFOR-ICRAF

Agroforestry and Livelihood System Research Officer
Overview
The position holder will lead and be involved in various participatory action research on improving sustainable agricultural, agroforesty and forestry practices and livelihood resilience.
The position holder will address diverse ecosystems in Indonesia, including peat, mangrove and dryland areas. He/she will mainly focus on regenerative agiculture, multifunctional farm management across agro-silvo-pastoral-fishery system and use them as entry points to community development, engagement and partnership with local stakeholders including government agencies and private sectors. The position holder will be responsible for developing and implementing capacity strengthening programs for farmers through training, demonstration trials and field schools that is gender-sensitive, responsive and transformative. She/he will be responsible in leading some components under projects such as Sustainable Landscapes for Climate-Resilient Livelihoods in Indonesia (Land4Lives) project funded by the Global Affair Canada (GAC) and Improving the Management of Peatlands and the Capacities of Stakeholders in Indonesia (Peat-Impact)funded by BMU-IKI, but not limited to them. The Scientist will lead and/or contribute to the resource mobilization as opportunities arise.
Duties and responsibilities
Science
- Collaborate
with multidisciplinary teams (including government, university, NGO,
conservation and private sector partners) in designing, conducting studies, and analyzing high quality
agroforestry systems management to promote sustainable livelihoods in
rural landscapes.
- Lead
and facilitate engagement at the community level, particularly with farmers
groups (including women farmer group) in promoting sustainable
agroforestry systems to support the enhancement of local livelihoods.
- Lead
and facilitate partnership development between local stakeholders
including village government and farmer groups with government agencies and
private sectors to support the enhancement of local livelihoods.
- Coordinate
with the extension team (lead by the AgroForestry Extension Specialist) in
developing training material related to agroforestry systems management.
- Coordinate
with the enterprise and market team (lead by the Senior Green Value Chains
and Markets Researcher) in developing market-oriented agroforestry
enterprise to enhance local livelihoods.
Management and Coordination-Communication
- Coordinate
with Province Coordinator at all CIFOR-ICRAF sites in implementing project
and program activities.
- Prepare
schedule for field activities, survey and training programs, including
identification of local stakeholders, who are potentially interested in
the project
- Facilitate
and maintain positive working relations with the community (farmer groups),
government and other relevant stakeholders to ensure cooperation and
success of project implementation
Knowledge management and communication
- Write
technical report in the form of Power Point presentation or other written
documents
- Coordinate
and contribute to communication of the research results in various
international, national and sub-national events, i.e. targeted at policy
makers (including seminars, workshops, websites and policy briefs) of
relevant projects and programs.
- Lead
and contribute to the communication of the research results to broader
audiences in the form of book chapter, international journal article or
other type of publications such as video and leaflet.
Capacity building
- Lead
the team in capacity strengthening programs of NARS and local stakeholders
in developing policy options for sustainable livelihoods with effective
agroforestry systems management.
- Supervise
field staff/casual staff conducting primary/secondary data collection
related research activities.
Education, knowledge and experience
- A minimum degree of an MSc in agriculture, agroforestry, forestry, rural development and / or other related fields
- Have a good representation and reputation to local stakeholders
- Good analytical skills to support research works
- Able to provide succinct field reports and produce communication products targeting local community
- Minimum 5 years of a successful work experience record in the subject area related to the agriculture, forestry, rural development and / or other related fields

- Computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or any office application).
- Basic administrative and documentation skills.
- Strong character, a multitasking person who can work under pressure.
- Well organized; able to meet deadlines, a good understanding of time management.
- Proactive and self-motivated, able to work independently as well as in a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across diverse partners’ background and ability to work well in multi-cultural teams.
- Good knowledge of communication (Indonesian and English).
- Willing to learn new skills/knowledge related to the scope/content of the specific projects.
- Generates creative, practical approaches to overcome challenging situations and deliver tasks timely
- Willing to receive constrictive feedback from suoervisors and other colleagues.
- Has a vision to develop the organization and an intention of continuous improvement.
- Ability to assess and manage risks, including in partnerships
- Proven ability to produce informative and effective scientific and populat publications that communicate research and development results.
Terms and conditions
- This is a local position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience.
- The initial appointment will be for 1 (one) year, inclusive of a three-month probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
- The duty station will be in Bogor, Indonesia.
