Overview

The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme (www.swm-programme.info/) was launched in October 2017. This seven-year (2017-2024) African Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) initiative is funded by the European Union. It aims to support ACP countries in their efforts to halt unsustainable levels of wildlife hunting, conserve biodiversity and strengthen people's livelihoods and food security.The management and implementation of the SWM Programme is being carried out through an international partnership that is led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and includes International Center for Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD), International Center for Forestry Research (CIFOR) and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).The SWM Programme needs to be communicated with accuracy, tact and diplomacy to a wider group of local and national audiences in the thirteen participating countries. Effective communication is key to the success of the SWM Programme. A detailed and comprehensive Communication Strategy guides the communication work, and a Communication Visual Handbook establishes the visual identity for SWM communication activities and products.

Duties and responsibilities

We are seeking a dedicated graphic designer to work specifically on the design of SWM communication materials at the project sites coordinated by:
  • CIFOR (Guyana);
  • WCS (Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Papua New Guinea, and Madagascar);
  • CIRAD (Gabon, Zambia and Zimbabwe);
  • and other project sites as needed.

The graphic designer will undertake the following tasks:
  • Work on the layout and preparation of a wide variety of print and electronic communication materials (e.g. brochures, infographics, banners, posters, leaflets, flyers, reports etc.) for the
  • Work on the layout and preparation of “knowledge products” produced by the CIFOR and other SWM project sites;
  • Prepare alternative creative designs for communication materials in line with SWM guidelines;
  • Produce communication materials in both English and French, ensuring that all language edits are included in both language versions;
  • Liaise closely with the relevant teams in the development, review and approval of the communication materials;
  • Assist with scheduling of the production process (e.g. copy and proofreading, graphics, translation services, typesetting, printing, etc.);
  • Track and monitors production flow to ensure that deadlines are met;
  • Perform other SWM Programme graphic design related work as required.
  • Other graphic design tasks as assigned.


Education, knowledge and experience

  • University degree in graphic design or related art and design qualifications;
  • Five to eight years’ experience in the design of a wide range of communication materials for printing and electronic distribution;
  • Strong theoretical and practical background in graphic design;
  • Excellent command of Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator etc.);
  • Knowledge of video editing software (e.g. Adobe Premier and AfterEffects) a plus;
  • Advanced understanding of vector-based imagery:
  • Knowledge and keen interest in nature conservation and rural development issues;
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English and French.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the communication requirements of an international organization;

Terms and conditions

  • This is a full-time consultancy position.
  • Duration of the assignment is 11 months.
