The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) envision a more equitable world where trees in all landscapes, from drylands to the humid tropics, enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR and ICRAF are non-profit science institutions that build and apply evidence to today’s most pressing challenges, including energy insecurity and the climate and biodiversity crises. Over a combined total of 65 years, we have built vast knowledge on forests and trees outside of forests in agricultural landscapes (agroforestry). Using a multidisciplinary approach, we seek to improve lives and to protect and restore ecosystems. Our work focuses on innovative research, partnering for impact, and engaging with stakeholders on policies and practices to benefit people and the planet. Founded in 1993 and 1978, CIFOR and ICRAF are members of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food secure future dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources.

Overview

CIFOR-ICRAF is the world’s leading authority on tropical forest and agroforestry landscapes. World Agroforestry (ICRAF) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) merged in 2019 - but retain their headquarters in Kenya and Indonesia, respectively. The merger facilitates the provision of the evidence and innovative solutions needed to scale up investment in sustainable land use and agroforestry practices, and address the global challenges of our time. The work is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and CIFOR-ICRAF’s strategy tackles five major global challenges: deforestation and biodiversity loss; climate crises; transforming food systems; unsustainable supply and value chains; and extreme inequality.

The merged organisation now seeks its first Chief Executive Officer. This leader will use CIFOR-ICRAF’s strengths in forestry, and agroforestry to provide a powerful platform to drive and connect research to delivery, creating actionable solutions. The CEO will be an effective advocator and lead resource mobilisation. A compelling and authentic communicator, the CEO will cultivate existing networks and build new ones. Finally, the CEO will be charged with the continued development of the institution. The CEO will complete the full integration of the organisation, ensure operational effectiveness, and develop shared culture and goals.

Candidates for the role will bring an understanding of research and its application and credibility with the scientific community. They will also have demonstrable skills in the leadership of complex, distributed, organisations. They will be galvanic leaders accustomed to building networks of partners and to influencing at the most senior levels. The CEO will be a good listener with an empathetic and collegial approach whilst being an effective leader and networker who will inspire CIFOR-ICRAF in the achievement of further growth and success.
