The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) envisions a more equitable world where forestry and landscapes enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR is a non-profit, scientific institution that conducts research on the most pressing challenges of forest and landscape management around the world. Using a global, multidisciplinary approach, we aim to improve human well-being, protect the environment, and increase equity. To do so, we conduct innovative research, develop partners’ capacity, and actively engage in dialogue with all stakeholders to inform policies and practices that affect forests and people. CIFOR is a CGIAR Research Center, and leads the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA). Our headquarters are in Bogor, Indonesia, with offices in Nairobi, Kenya; Yaoundé, Cameroon; Lima, Peru; and Bonn, Germany.
Scientist, Sustainable Investments and Value Chains
The primary responsibility of the Scientist is to contribute to the development and implementation of a vigorous and globally relevant research agenda focused on examining the effectiveness of public and private governance arrangements, supply chain interventions, and business and investment models for sustainable supply of commodities and smallholders’ livelihoods. Efforts should be dedicated to comparing the social and environmental outcomes across different interventions (e.g. zero deforestation, certification standards, moratoria, fire-free villages), and the potential to promote uptake or to scale them up to transition more effectively to low-carbon agricultural development with greater social inclusion and equity, under options that enhance social conditions and the empowerment of women. These efforts will contribute to promoting investments that safeguard the rights of local populations, including marginalized groups such as smallholders, women and indigenous people.
This is an international position, but with emphasis in Southeast Asia, in the following areas:
• evaluating the performance of public and private arrangements and interventions in the supply chains, finance systems, investment models and partnerships to promote sustainable supply of commodities and inclusive business models, and identifying options to improve their effectiveness
• assessing the differential outcomes and trade-offs from agricultural and forestry investments under different business models and identifying their potential to create shared value and deliver improved social, economic and environmental benefits, with explicit gender considerations
• identifying and examining the potential of emerging innovative approaches, strategies and systems that support the achievement of private sector commitments to sustainability, including hybrid governance systems, improvements in certification systems and jurisdictional approaches.
During the first year of the assignment, much of the research will be conducted under projects that examine the implications of palm oil expansion, prospects for development of the bioeconomy sector and corporate commitments to sustainability in Indonesia. The Scientist should contribute to expand this work to other countries in Southeast Asia. In addition to undertaking research, the Scientist will support learning platforms and processes, and contribute to policy engagement with private and public actors and initiatives. He/she will be a member of CIFOR’s Value Chain, Finance and Investments (VFI) team, report to the Team Leader and work in close collaboration with other members of the team. This work will link to Flagship 3 on “Sustainable Global Value Chains and Investments” under the Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) Research Program in collaboration with other institutional partners.
