Deforestation low in Congo Basin, but likely to increase

Deforestation is relatively low in the Congo Basin, but it is likely to increase in the coming years. Urbanization, agricultural changes and mining expansion are likely to drive an increase in deforestation and forest degradation, according to two recent research papers. The population in the region is expected to double in the next few decades as well: Combined with an increase road building, this is expected to have the greatest effect on deforestation.
