Institutional Analysis
 

Summary

This sub-project intends to investigate the following key objectives, amongst others:

  • To investigate the access to and control over resources by different individuals, households and groups;
  • To identify resource values and community characteristics that stimulate the promotion of private and/or community-based systems;
  • To explore the factors resulting in institutional change and to analyse the manner in which institutions respond to changes.

The work is being undertaken through examining four themes, namely:

  • Power relations amongst stakeholders and levels of devolution;
  • Institutional change and factors driving change;
  • Conflicts and their resolution;
  • Making community-based management work.

The project has held three policy fora and has hosted one large seminar on governance issues.

Methods and Tools

The research involves literature review, tools drawn from participatory rural appraisal appraisal and various qualitative data collection approaches.

Research Sites

There are three main sites in each of three countries, namely Zimbabwe (Chivi, Gokwe, Mangwende Districts), Malawi (Blantyre, Lilongwe and Kasungu Districts) and Tanzania (Hadeni, Iringa and Babati Districts)
