Christine Padoch – Humans have a history of managing forests for food security

Christine Padoch, CIFOR Programme Director presents at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju, Korea, September 2012.

Managing forests is combining food security, food production and forest issues in the same landscape. Christine discusses how smallholder management of forests tends to be invisible, but throughout human existence, forests have been managed for a variety of human needs. The case study of acai palms demonstrates a traditional way of managing forests for food that is successful in responding to new markets and is more sustainable for diets, livelihoods and landscapes.
