Andrew Steer: 20 by 20 initiative to restore 20 million h in Latin America

Andrew Steer, President and CEO of the World Resources Institute, discusses the launch of Initiative 20×20 at the Global Landscapes Forum on 7 December 2014 in Lima, Peru.

Initiative 20×20 is a country-led effort to bring 20 million hectares of degraded land in Latin America and the Caribbean into restoration by 2020.

The World Resources Institute (WRI), International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Center for Tropical Agricultural Research and Education (CATIE), and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are supporting Initiative 20×20, through the development of monitoring systems, the economic analysis of restoration opportunities, the training and the sharing of experiences between partners and helping implement the countries’ ambitions. The announcements made through Initiative 20×20 will feed into the Bonn Challenge on Forests, Climate Change and Biodiversity, which promotes the restoration of 150 million hectares of land worldwide by 2020.
