Session 3. Breakout A: Small & medium forest enterprises as drivers for sustainability

Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) contribute to improve local livelihoods, while conserving the natural resource base.

Although most of them are informal there is enough evidence that with the right conditions and incentives, they could deliver significant socio-economic benefits while generating incentives to protect and manage forest. This potential, however, has yet to be realized as significant obstacles still exist in many countries.

This session will discuss challenges and opportunities of SMFEs as drivers of sustainability in light of the findings from global studies as well as field experience from Africa, Latin America and Asia.
