The Democratic Republic of Congo is rich in tropical forest and biodiversity. But periods of political turbulence have adversely affected university education, and hence the country’s future capacity for sustainable forest management.
To backstop this shortfall, CIFOR introduced a long-term capacity-building program at the University of Kisangani to train Masters and PhD students in biodiversity and forestry management. Many have already graduated and several more are on the way.
Participants at this side event will learn about the strategies in place, the tools in use, the reforms in progress – and the challenges and constraints.
