Indonesia - Gunung Lumut, Kalimantan

Malinau KalimantanGunung Lumut - Kalimantan  |  Papua  |  Sumatra

Gunung Lumut Protection Forest (GLPF; almost 42,000 ha of relatively undisturbed Dipterocarp lowland forest) is an important area for biodiversity conservation and watershed management in Paser District, East Kalimantan. It is under heavy pressure from forest encroachment and timber extraction. The Gunung Lumut Biodiversity Assessment (GLBA), coordinated by Tropenbos International–Indonesia (TBI-I), was initiated in order to improve the GLPF management plan and to apply for the status of World Heritage Site. See http://www.tropenbos.org/sites/site_indonesianewpage2.php for more information on the TBI-I project in GLPF.

TBI-I asked the CIFOR MLA team to complement their biodiversity survey using the MLA approach in an area of more than 30,000 ha. The study aimed at identifying species important for people's daily needs, potential sites for ecotourism and other development options, and to understand local people’s view on threats to forests. The survey took place in November 2005. The team worked in two communities, one inside and one outside the protected area (Muluy and Rantau Layung respectively), for 3 weeks each.
