Presentation's Summary
Some of the presentations made at the Maputo Planning meeting held from the 6 to 9 February, 2006.
The presentations by Bruce Campbell and Peter Dewees highlighted the following points:
- Objectives of the project
- Intended audiences
- Policy instruments
- Key questions to be answered
- Primary outputs and time frames
The primary objective of the project is to develop a framework for an improved understanding of the linkage between rural livelihoods and miombo woodlands, and informing the development of social and economic policies with poverty alleviation as their primary objective.
The project targets several levels of audiences. Firstly, within the World Bank, the project aims to positively influence Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) and Environment (ENV) staff working on forestry interventions on their perception of the miombo woodlands as a motor for rural development. Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) staff working on poverty reduction through PRSPs, Country Assistance Strategy (CAS) and Development Policy Lending Instruments are also targeted. The second level of audiences are the policy makers in the public sector who are at the center of formulating policies on forestry and in articulating the role of forests in national economic development and rural livelihood enhancement. The third level of audiences is the development practitioners, academics and donor agencies.
The keys questions that form the points for intervention are:
- What is the role of miombo woodlands in income generation and consumption patterns for forest products and service;
- How can miombo be better managed to meet subsistence demand?
- How can policies help reduce risk and vulnerability?
A number of activities and outputs were identified and these will be delivered to the different audiences through workshops, face to face dialogues, policy briefs, national reports and referred publications.
