 In light of increasing criticism of the social and environmental impact of Chinese trade and investment in Africa, CIFOR scientist Louis Putzel writes in this blog, "Is China's interest and impact in Africa really that different from any other country, and if so, how?" He draws from new CIFOR research – a synthesis of findings from Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon – which examines the impact of China's mining, forestry and agricultural sectors on forests and forest-dependent communities.

 Climate change adaptation specialist Emilia Pramova discusses in this blog how evaluating the optimum mix between mitigation and adaption strategies in policy design can lead to inadequate theoretical assumptions, inaccurate estimates and, ultimately, misguided decisions. She looks at how the weighing of climate change consequences and policy responses is complicated further by differences in the interests between actors and subjective interpretation of risks.

 Assessing how biofuels affect forests and people's livelihoods and how its production can be more sustainable has been made easier following the recent release of an interactive map. The Global Biofuel Information Tool, developed by CIFOR, provides a geographical overview of biofuel production, consumption and investment around the world. The map is the first systematic attempt at gathering and consolidating data on biofuels.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been invited to give the keynote and is expected to lay out his vision for how Indonesia can safeguard its forests, while at the same time promoting economic growth. His address will be followed by speeches from Erik Solheim, Norway's Minister for the Environment, Dr. Andrew Steer, Special Envoy on Climate Change at the World Bank, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Chairman of Indonesia's REDD+ Task Force and Indonesia's Minister of Forestry, H.E. With a broad agreement on REDD+ put in place during the U.N. climate change talks last year, the focus of negotiations ahead of COP17 is shifting to the next level of detail in the design and implementation of REDD+, as well as adaptation programs. This year's Forest Day will have a particular African focus, looking at the humid forests of the Congo Basin and elsewhere, and the continent's wide expanses of dry forest areas. Register now.
