Riina Jalonen joined Bioversity in 2009. In her work she evaluates the genetic sustainability of forest restoration and management practices. She provides technical support to South and Southeast Asian countries in the conservation and management of forest genetic resources through the Asia Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme (APFORGEN).

Riina also acted as Bioversity’s gender focal point in the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry from 2010 to 2013, contributing to the development of the Program’s Gender Strategy and initiating a programme of work for gender integration in Bioversity’s research on forest and trees.

Prior to joining Bioversity, she conducted PhD research on nutrient cycling in tropical agroforestry systems and coordinated a series of research seminars on the ecological and socio-economic aspects of forest use at the University of Helsinki.
