Senior Adviser to Minister of Forestry on Economic Affairs and International Trade

IB Putera Parthama, PhD  is currently Senior Adviser to Minister of Forestry on Economic Affairs and International Trade. In addition, he is also the Acting Director General of Indonesia’s Forestry Research and Development Agency (FORDA), which also makes him an ex-officio member of CIFOR Board of Trustees and an ASOF (ASEAN Senior Officer on Forestry) Leader for Indonesia.  In that position, Putera has been involved in various international,  regional and bilateral events/meetings on forestry, from Working Groups within ASEAN to ITTO/ITTC.

Putera is a forester by training and graduated from Gadjah Mada University. He then received his Master and PhD degrees from Michigan State University, USA, in 1990 and 1995 respectively.  As early as 1990, his article predicting the not-so-bright future of the Indonesian plywood industry, due to the subsidy policy, was published in Australian National University’s Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies; a prediction that has evidently become a reality.

Before assuming managerial positions, Putera was a researcher in Forest Biometrics at FORDA.  Among his research interests are the quantitative-optimization of multiple benefits from forests. To some extent, this is in line with the currently much embraced landscape approach of managing forests.
