Peter Wehrheim, a German national, is an economist by training. He started his professional career at EUROSTAT, the statistical office of the European Union in Luxemburg in 1990. Between 1994 and 1998 he worked as an Assistant Professor for Food Policy at the University of Kiel/Germany. Between 1998 and 2004 he was a Senior Researcher to the Centre for Development Research/ University of Bonn. Between 2001 and 2002 he worked as an Associate Professor at the Institute for Economics and Agricultural Policy at the University of Bonn. He also worked at think tanks and research institutes in the US (International Food Policy Research Institute, IFPRI and Department for Economics at the University of Maryland). As an independent consultant he worked between 1996 and 2003 for the World Bank, the FAO, the European Commission and others. Since 2004 he is employed by the European Commission where he started out in the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development. Since September 2010 he is Head of Unit in the new Directorate General “Climate Action”. His portfolio includes climate finance (EU internal and external) and deforestation (REDD+ and LULUCF).
