Partner-in-Charge of Asia, Jones Day; Former US Ambassador to ASEAN
Ambassador (Ret.) David Carden is Partner-in-Charge of Asia at the international law firm, Jones Day. As the first resident U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN, Mr. Carden oversaw the broadening engagement of the U.S. in Southeast Asia, which included the Obama Administration’s “rebalance” to the region. Based in the U.S. Mission to ASEAN in Jakarta, his responsibilities included supporting ASEAN as it moves toward economic integration in 2015 and advocating for the systemic changes necessary to promote peaceful and prosperous growth in the region.
Under his leadership, the Mission addressed issues inherent in realizing ASEAN’s aspirations, including economic development, rule of law, effective governance, natural disaster response, education, addressing human and wildlife trafficking, responding to deforestation and climate change, food and water security, and increasing city sustainability and resilience.
Before his Ambassadorship, Mr. Carden was a partner in Jones Day’s New York office where he co-chaired the Securities Litigation & SEC Enforcement Practice.
