Photographer’s remarks

A rapid forest conversion into illegal coffee plantations is one of the most serious problems in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park besides poaching and illegal logging. The coffee farmers usually buy or rent an area illegally inside the park from local village elites, known as preman. Increased awareness among decision makers, law enforcers, and general public about biodiversity conservation and legislation concerning Bukit Barisan National Park is important to ensure a stable or an increased population of many endangered species that live within this park, such as Sumatran rhino, Sumatran tiger, sun bear and Sumatran elephant.
