Rationale and approach
During the ACP FORENET start-up workshop it was decided that 2 major research themes should be considered: ‘Tropical forests and climate change’ and ‘Sustainable use of forest goods and services’.
The forests and climate change theme is new; it was not on the original list of potential research issues developed after the project’s feasibility study, but it was deemed of utmost importance by all participants in the current international context.
Two research programmes are proposed for each theme. The 2 programmes under tropical forests and climate change address key issues: mitigation
by reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and adaptation by
examining livelihoods impacts. They are also directly relevant for all project countries. The 2 programmes of the sustainable use theme were originally identified by the project feasibility study and are also directly relevant to all project countries.
