2012

  • FORENET Workshop, CIFOR, Bogor, Indonesia, 12-14 November 2012
    The workshop was attended by FORENET partners from Central Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific regions. The objectives of the workshop were:
    • To share key experiences and strengths of the existing FORENET initiatives;
    • To reflect and provide feedback on key lessons from the recent FORENET midterm review;
    • To identify positive actions to improve interregional collaboration, programming, capacity building and communication;
    • And to develop a shared vision and ascertain the next steps for the design of FORENET Phase 2, if appropriate.
  • FORENET Biomass Assessment Workshop, Makokou, Gabon, 19-26 July 2012
    The objectives of this interregional workshop was to establish both the African and the Papua New Guinea Cross-Continental Project teams’ fieldwork in association with Forest Biomass Assessment. Equally, to share their experiences of the common methodology used in the three ACP regions involved in FORENET activities.

  • Regional Workshop on Forest Carbon Assessment and Monitoring in Pacific Island Countries, Nadi, Fiji, 18-22 June 2012
    The ‘Regional Workshop on Forest Carbon Assessment and Monitoring’ was attended by more than 50 participants representing 10 Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) and a number of international and regional agencies and programmes/projects. The objectives of the workshop were:
    • To build capacity of key personnel and institutions on forest carbon assessment and monitoring in PICs;
    • To share information on the latest methodologies and technologies for forest carbon monitoring;
    • To identify common challenges;
    • To discuss the regional standard methodologies;
    • To establish a regional forest carbon monitoring technical group;
    • To contribute into the discussion towards the formulation of the draft Regional Policy Framework for REDD+;
    • And to conduct training on development, use and management of MS-Access as relational database for analysing, storing and reporting of forest information.
  • Workshop and Field Demonstration on the Measurement of Biomass of Trees, Gabon, 17-22 March 2012
    The objectives of the Workshop and Field Demonstration on the Measurement of Biomass of Trees were:
    • To enhance networking on forest research activities in ACP countries;
    • To develop, implement and maintain common procedures for assessing aboveground biomass and carbon stocks;
    • To learn how to use the R statistical data analysis software package for developing allometric equations to estimate aboveground biomass.
  • Regional Training Workshop on Tree Propagation for Agroforestry in the Pacific, Forestry Training Centre, Colo-I-Suva Forest National Park, Fiji, 5-8 March 2012
    The ‘Regional Training Workshop on Tree Propagation for Agroforestry in the Pacific’ was attended by 30 participants from 14 Pacific Island member countries of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC). The objectives of the workshop were:
    • To share and exchange information, knowledge and experience, including ‘success stories’ on agroforestry from participating countries;
    • To assess and evaluate existing agroforestry practices/activities in the Pacific region and formulate research and develop programmes for agroforestry systems that would be suitable for each country in the Pacific;
    • To conduct training on plant propagation and other nursery practices, including species selection, seed collection, seed treatment and germination, potting and maintenance of seedlings, vegetative propagation/techniques, etc.

  • Training for Construction of Aboveground Biomass Allometric Models ‘Assessment of Forest Biomass and Carbon Stocks for REDD Preparations in ACP Member Countries’ in Lae, Papua New Guinea, 6-9 December 2011
    The training for Construction of Aboveground Biomass Allometric Models’ focused on building the technical capacity of scientists, managers and foresters to enable them to comprehend the need for measuring biomass and to develop models from biomass measurements.

  • Montage de projets, outils de suivi-évaluation, fonctionnements des réseaux de recherché (Building a proposal, monitoring projects, and research networks) in Libreville, Gabon, 25-29 April 2011
    Around 140 participants attended the workshop. One of its main recommendations was to start thinking about the sustainability of activities on the Central Africa region after FORENET funding ends in December 2012.

  • Workshop on Central African non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in Douala, Cameroon, 17–18 May 2010    
    About 30 experts from Central Africa participated. Workshop goals included:
    • to highlight the importance of NTFPs in the countries concerned
    • to develop a realistic method for collecting data on NTFPs in African countries, especially ACP FORENET partners
    • to make proposals to harmonise regulations and policies affecting  NTFPs in Central Africa.
    • Sub-regional workshop on harmonisation of national reviews on "non-timber forest products (NTFPS) in Central Africa", 17-18 May 2010, Douala, Cameroon.

2008

  • FORENET workshop on developing a cross-continental research project in Bogor, Indonesia, 26–30 January 2008
    Three focal point organisers arranged the ‘Developing a Cross-Continental Research project’ workshop at CIFOR's campus, in Bogor, to develop a research project which focuses on climate change and tropical forests. The organisers were:
    • Dr Joseph Okouyi Okouyi from IRET/CENAREST in Gabon
    • Ms Vanessa Benn from Iwokrama International Centre in Guyana
    • Mr Forova Oavika from Forest Research Institute of Papua New Guinea.   

  • Project management meetings Guyana, 16–20 June 2008
    The first Scientific Advisory Group meeting and Second Steering Committee Meeting of the ACP FORENET project were held at the Iwokrama Field Station located in the Iwokrama Foerest of Georgetown. Participants in the Scientific Advisory Group meeting included 12 representatives from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Central African Republic, France, Gabon, Guyana, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Republic of the Congo. The advisory group meeting was assisted by the project coordinator and the regional focal points. While the Steering Committee meeting was attended by donor representatives, by all project partners (except Papua New Guinea) and by observers from the Iwokrama International Centre and the Guyana Forestry Commission.
