Indonesia's Fire Problem
Causes, Impacts, Costs, Policies, Solutions

The main authors of work in this area include:

  • Luca Tacconi (as part of the project ‘Underlying causes and impacts of fires in Indonesia Phase II’, funded by the European Union, the Government of Japan and ACIAR).
  • Grahame Applegate and Suyanto (as part of the project ‘Underlying causes and impacts of forest and forest land fires in Indonesia Phase I’, funded by the USDA Forest Service)

Fire patterns, impacts, causes and policy problems in Indonesia were reviewed. The main conclusions arising from this body of work are that appropriate policies and management strategies need to be put in place to avoid a persistent fire problem. Fire-related policies should be revised and based on the available understanding of the true nature of the problem and underlying causes of the problem fires. The policies need to be directed at the specific causes and policy problems which are spelt out. A blanket zero-burning policy across the country does not make sense and is not enforceable. The policies need to address differences in climate, fuels, and land use patterns across the country.
