Enhancing the role of forests in adapting to climate change

  • Adaptation to Climate Change and Forests in West Africa (ACFAO)

Locations: Burkina Faso, Mali
Duration: 2011-2015
Funder: French Global Environment Facility
Partners: CIRAD
To develop policies and practices to support the sustainable management of forests in the Savannah’s of West Africa, and to increase the adaptive capacities of local communities through improved livelihoods from ecosystemic goods and services provided by the forests.

  • AdaptEA: Adaptation of people to climate change in East Africa

Locations: Kenya, Uganda
Duration: 2011-2015
Funder: The Rockefeller Foundation
Partners: World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), Makerere University, Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI)
The Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project will help to inform rural stakeholders, district resource managers and national policy makers in East Africa regarding the sustainability of different adaptation strategies.

  • Climate Change and Forests in the Congo Basin: Synergies between Adaptation and Mitigation (COBAM)

Location: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Republic of the Congo
Duration : 2010-2014
Funder: African Development Bank

Partners:  French Research and Development Institute (IRD), University of East Anglia (UEA), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)
To ensure that policy makers, practitioners and local communities in the Congo Basin have the tools and information necessary to design polices and projects in order to adapt to a changing climate. This includes a focus on poverty reduction, enhancement of non-carbon ecosystem services, and the protection of local livelihoods and rights.

  • CRiSTAL-Forests (Community-based Risk Screening Tool – Adaptation and Livelihoods)
