International Workshop on Large-Scale Agricultural Investments Hamburg, Germany, 11 May 2012
This workshop aims to bring researchers and practitioners together to promote debate, exchange ideas, and shed light on current challenges – in short, it aims to stimulate discussion on large-scale agricultural investments and land deals, which have recently received considerable media coverage. Typically, these deals are perceived as illegal “land grabs”, however, surprisingly little is known of the nature and consequences of land deals: neither on the scale of the phenomenon, nor on the underlying contractual arrangements, and even less on the consequences for the local population. Organised by a research team at GIGA working on a joint research project on “Large-scale land acquisitions and sustainable development” with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the University of Greifswald, the workshop will address the legal and political, socio-economic, ecological and ethical, historical and conflict management dimensions of large-scale land acquisitions and deals. CIFOR will participate in this workshop by presenting a paper on “Food or wood? Why large scale agricultural investments in Indonesia target forested areas.” More.
