4. Analysis of opportunities for forest-based bioenergy production that benefit local people in developing countries

The production of bioenergy can provide an opportunity for many developing countries to diversify agricultural and forestry activities, reduce dependence on fossil fuels (mainly oil) and contribute to rural income generation and economic growth in a sustainable manner.

Learning lessons from large-scale bioenergy development

This activity generates a regional overview of bioenergy development and its impacts, and documents lessons learned from country-level assessments of large-scale bioenergy development to-date. Emphasis is placed on environmental, social and economic implications, including gender-differentiated impacts.

Analysing the potential for sustainable bionergy production in sub-Saharan Africa that benefits local people

Analysis focuses on which policies, including tenure reform and transparency of investment-related decision making, have the potential to ensure bioenergy development does not result in communities being alienated from forest land and resources they currently depend on.

Analysing opportunities for rural bioenergy enterprise development

Analysis focuses on rural forest-based bioenergy enterprise development in sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on constraints and opportunities for leveraging greater benefits for local people. The objective is to support the development of policies which can assist suitable developing countries in capturing the local livelihood benefits of bioenergy, while addressing environmental concerns in an appropriate way.
