Enhancing the role of forests in adapting to climate change
Adaptation to Climate Change and Forests in West Africa (ACFAO)
Locations: Burkina Faso, Mali
Donor: French Global Environment Facility
To develop policies and practices to support the sustainable management of forests in the Savannah’s of West Africa, and to increase the adaptive capacities of local communities through improved livelihoods from ecosystemic goods and services provided by the forests.
AdaptEA: Adaptation of people to climate change in East Africa
Locations: Kenya, Uganda
Donor: The Rockefeller Foundation
Partners: World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), Makerere University, Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI)
The Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project will help to inform rural stakeholders, district resource managers and national policy makers in East Africa regarding the sustainability of different adaptation strategies.
Climate Change and Forests in the Congo Basin: Synergies between Adaptation and Mitigation (COBAM)
Location: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Republic of the Congo
Duration : 2010-2014
Donor: African Development Bank
Partners: French Research and Development Institute (IRD), University of East Anglia (UEA), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)
To ensure that policy makers, practitioners and local communities in the Congo Basin have the tools and information necessary to design polices and projects in order to adapt to a changing climate. This includes a focus on poverty reduction, enhancement of non-carbon ecosystem services, and the protection of local livelihoods and rights.
CRiSTAL-Forests (Community-based Risk Screening Tool - Adaptation and Livelihoods)
Locations: 1 site in West Africa, 1 site in East Africa
Objective: To conduct a scientific review and field testing of the CRiSTAL Forest (Community-based Risk Screening Tool – Adaptation and Livelihoods) toolkit, a project planning and management tool aimed at helping local development practitioners integrate risk reduction and climate change adaptation into other local initiatives.
Congo basin forest and climate change adaptation
Locations: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of the Congo
Donor: International Development Research Centre
Partners: Institut de Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement, Cameroon; Ministry of the Environment, Cameroon, University of Kisangani, D.R. Congo; University of Bangui, Central African Republic; University Marian Nguabi, Republic of the Congo
Objective: To build on traditional knowledge and use participatory methods to enhance the capabilities of Central African countries and forest-dependent communities in these countries to adapt to climate change.
FORCC: Using forests to enhance resilience to climate change project
Locations: Burkina Faso, Laos, Honduras
Donor: World Bank/Program on Forests
Partners: Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE), Sustainable Forestry and Rural Development Project (SUFORD), National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) Objective: To support the development of polices and processes which enhance the role of forests in adaptation and resilience to climate change .
Investigation of processes driving low level westerlies in Central Africa
Locations: Central Africa
Donor: Met Office Hadley Centre - Government of the United Kingdom
To improve our understanding of the atmospheric processes underlying climate variability and change in central Africa and to analyse this date through regional climate model simulations.
TroFCCA: Tropical Forest and Climate Change Adaptation in Southeast Asia, West Africa and Central America
Locations: Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia, Mali, Nicaragua
Donor: European Commission
Partner: Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, Costa Rica (www.catie.ac.cr)
Objective: To contribute to the understanding of adaptation to climate change within tropical forest ecosystems. Through the development of specific methods to assess vulnerability, the project will contribute to the integration of forests in adaptation policies and adaptation in forest policies
